How I Feel…waiting for my students AP Scores

So. I am a second year teacher and this is my second year teaching AP US History… I love the course, love my kids, but it’s all so stressful because as a teacher you can only do so much to prepare them… they have to do the work and you can’t be there to help or guide them. Please say a Prayer for my students seeing as they get scores back on July 8th! Regardless I will either be crying happy or sad tears on a beach…

... Read moreWaiting for AP test scores can cast a shadow on both teachers and students. With the scores releasing on July 8th, educators experience a whirlwind of emotions, from anticipation to anxiety. For many students, AP exams are a pivotal moment in their academic career, and it’s natural for teachers to feel a deep connection to their students' outcomes. The pressure mounts as teachers prepare their students throughout the year. Every lesson, exam, and review session is a chance to instill knowledge and skills, but once the tests are completed, the responsibility shifts away from the classroom. The outcomes depend largely on how well students utilized the strategies and content delivered during the course. This can lead to apprehension among teachers about whether they did enough to prepare their students. In the case of AP US History, where passing scores can significantly impact college applications and scholarships, the stakes feel particularly high. Scores can deeply affect students' confidence, their educational trajectory, and even their mental health. When the scores arrive, a mix of happiness and sadness is inevitable. Teachers hope to celebrate their students' success but also brace themselves for the possibility of disappointing news. In this time of uncertainty, it's essential to support one another. Connecting with fellow educators and sharing experiences can help alleviate some of the pressure. Many teachers turn to online forums or dedicated hashtags such as #teacher or #teachersoflemon8 to find a community that understands the challenges they're facing. It's a reminder that they are not alone in this experience. Ultimately, waiting for AP scores is a moment for reflection. Teachers should remember the hard work their students put in throughout the year and acknowledge the effort, regardless of the outcomes. Fostering a growth mindset, where students view scores as part of their learning journey rather than the sole determinant of their worth, can help mitigate some stress. Through this waiting period, it's vital to instill resilience in students and encourage them to view challenges as opportunities for growth.
