Movie Review 🎬 “Strange Darling”

TW: Abuse and SA

There’s a lot to say about this film. In ways it broke ground in storytelling, doing things I had never seen, was visually stunning and surprising, but I will also say you could tell it was written by a man, as the message could be damaging/harmful to women/survivors of assault.

It was broken down into chapters that were also out of order, leaving you confused and surprised for much of the film. I loved this aspect.

But the main characters were fairly black and white and nuance was missing. I think it was very unrealistic, but then again, it was a horror flick.

Overall, twists and turns, I would say it’s very worth the watch. Filmically, gorgeous and inspiring. But the message could be harmful for women and disparaging for those who have faced abuse.

⭐️Overall rating: 8/10

... Read moreIn a landscape of recent horror films, 'Strange Darling' stands out for its innovative narrative approach, being both visually striking and thematically complex. The film is described as a thrilling experience, crafted by JT Mollner, who brings a unique perspective from his work on previous projects like 'Barbarian'. Critics have hailed it as 'sublimely brilliant,' with reviews noting it as 'one of the most fascinating thrillers in ages'. The plot unfolds through disjointed chapters, creating an atmosphere of suspense and surprise that keeps viewers engaged. However, there are important discussions surrounding its themes, particularly regarding the portrayal of abuse and its implications for viewers. While some aspects of the narrative are praised for their originality, it's crucial to address how these elements may resonate or alienate audiences, especially those who have experienced trauma. Engaging with such themes requires sensitivity, and reviews indicate that this film, while beautifully made, might risk trivializing serious issues faced by women. Overall, the film's artistic elements and its impact on the horror genre prompt meaningful dialogues about storytelling ethics in cinema today.
