I MET MY YOUNGERSELF FOR COFFEE

2025/2/22 Edited to

... Read moreIt's incredible how a simple coffee chat with my younger self brought back so many memories and validated feelings I'd buried deep. The original article captures just a snippet of that raw conversation, but the truth is, many of us have faced, or are currently facing, challenging home environments, especially with a parent like a dad who might cause pain. If you're living with your dad and struggling, or trying to help someone who is, know that you're not alone. One of the hardest parts was admitting the hurt. My younger self's "I hate dad" resonated deeply because I'd felt it too. It’s okay to acknowledge those complex emotions. For years, I struggled with feeling like I had to fix things or endure. I remember the pain of being kicked me out twice in high school simply for standing up for myself. That feeling of displacement and rejection is something no one should have to experience. Finding your tribe is absolutely essential. My younger self mentioned her sisters were a huge support, and it’s true – they still are a source of strength for me even today. And while my bestfriend from back then and I don't speak anymore, the impact she had was immense. Sometimes, people are just meant for a season, but their light can guide you through the darkest times. Seek out friends, mentors, or even online communities who understand and uplift you. You don't have to carry this burden alone. Thinking about the future can be daunting, especially when home life is turbulent. My younger self confessed she didn't want to go to college, but I shared how pursuing education became my escape route and a path to independence. Being a first-generation college student, achieving two degrees, and planning for a third wasn't just about academics; it was about proving to myself that I could build a life entirely on my terms. Education, vocational training, or even just a stable job can be your ticket to freedom. The biggest question she asked was, 'Will I ever make it out?' And I can tell you, with all my heart, yes, you can. For me, 'making it out' meant saving every penny, meticulously planning my departure, and eventually, moved across the country. It wasn't just a physical move; it was an emotional declaration that no one will ever hurt me again in the same way. It meant setting firm boundaries, learning to prioritize my own well-being, and understanding that my worth isn't tied to someone else's approval or acceptance. If you're in a situation where you need to leave, start by creating a safety plan. This might involve discreetly saving money, securing important documents, finding a safe place to go, and confiding in a trusted adult or organization. It's a journey, not a sprint, and there will be tough days. But holding onto the vision of a life where you feel safe, loved, and free is what will propel you forward. You have the strength within you to write your own story, just as I did.

Gosh, making this made me so emotional. There were so many feelings reflecting on the past 13 years, feeling all the love, loss, joy, pain, and excitement all over again; allowing myself to be proud of who I’ve become and the choices I’ve made to be here. The idea of meeting my 17-year-old self at
