Maternal Mental Health

Mother’s Day comes with a lot of mixed emotions for many individuals for a variety of reasons.

One reason mother’s may struggle on Mother’s Day is due to experiencing a maternal mental health disorder, whether current or past.

Maternal mental health disorders deserve attention, recognition, and treatment, and although help is available, there is still significant stigma, shame, and barriers surrounding getting help.

This post is a brief resource that touches on the scope of the problem, disparities, treatment, and resources to get help.

⚠️ Content warning: this post discusses various maternal mental health conditions, mentions miscarriage, stillbirth, DV, and other potential [birth] trauma triggers ⚠️

... Read moreFrom personal experience in supporting new mothers, I've seen firsthand how maternal mental health can be an overlooked yet critical aspect of postpartum care. Many women bravely face depression, anxiety, or other maternal mental health disorders, often struggling in silence due to stigma or lack of awareness. What stands out is how prevalence rates of these conditions have increased significantly in recent years, with disorders like postpartum depression (PPD) affecting up to 20% of U.S. mothers, and anxiety impacting 20%, largely peaking during early pregnancy and postpartum periods. Risk factors such as a history of mental illness, adverse childhood experiences, socio-economic challenges, and birth trauma profoundly affect outcomes. Women in rural areas or those from marginalized communities often face greater hurdles in accessing timely care. The consequences of untreated maternal mental health issues can be severe—not only for the mother, including increased suicide risk, but also for infant outcomes like preterm birth or breastfeeding difficulties. On the positive side, effective support and treatment options exist. Non-clinical strategies like self-care, social support, and mindfulness practices build resilience, while professional help such as psychotherapy, lactation consulting, and medication can be tailored to individual needs. Raising awareness about screening—which remains underutilized—is crucial; only about 20% of women are screened during pregnancy or postpartum despite federal initiatives to increase this. In my experience, community support groups and organizations like Postpartum Support International play an invaluable role in reducing stigma and connecting mothers to specialized resources. Offering compassion, education, and accessible treatment pathways is essential to improving maternal mental health outcomes. Integrating these approaches helps foster a healthier environment not only for mothers but also for their families, breaking cycles of untreated mental illness. If you or someone you know is struggling, reaching out to specialized hotlines or organizations can be a vital first step. Remember, maternal mental health is a journey many face, and support is available to make that journey more manageable and hopeful.
