The Bluest Eye Book Review
This book was a 5 ⭐️ read for me. I really enjoyed the writing and how it felt almost poetic to me. The story itself is sad but also eye opening. The main character, Pecola Breedlove, has such a sad story and to see how being beautiful was so important to her, that it ultimately took over her mental.

I found Pauline's own story, how her perception of beauty was warped by societal standards and her experiences, to be profoundly sad. Her harshness towards Pecola felt like a tragic cycle, a reflection of her own unfulfilled desires for acceptance and beauty. It made me realize how deeply intergenerational trauma and internalized racism can affect a family, creating an environment where a child like Pecola feels invisible and unworthy. The setting of the novel, Lorain, Ohio, in the 1940s, is not just a backdrop; it's a living, breathing entity that shapes every character. Morrison's ability to immerse you in that specific time and place, with its racial tensions, economic struggles, and rigid beauty ideals, is phenomenal. It made me reflect on how historical context plays such a crucial role in understanding the characters' motivations and despair. The societal pressure to conform to white beauty standards during that era is vividly portrayed, and it's heartbreaking to see how it manifests in Pecola's desperate wish. And speaking of the book itself, the iconic cover of *The Bluest Eye*, often featuring a solemn young Black girl, perfectly encapsulates the emotional depth within. My copy, a beautiful hardcover edition, feels like holding a piece of history. Seeing the image of the book, which also highlighted Toni Morrison as a Nobel Prize winner, on the page with my review, made me appreciate the weight and significance of her work even more.
