Speaker phone
You know that moment when your phone rings, and your first instinct is to hit that speakerphone button? For me, it's a hard 'no speaker phone for me' situation, especially these days. I wanted to share why this has become such a personal rule for me, and why I think it's worth considering. First off, let's talk about privacy. When I'm on a call, it's usually a conversation meant for my ears alone, or maybe just the person I'm speaking with. Using speakerphone instantly broadcasts that conversation to anyone within earshot. Whether I'm at home, in a public space, or even just in my car, I feel like I'm invading the personal space of others and compromising my own privacy. I've been in situations where I've inadvertently overheard someone else's very personal discussion because they had their phone on speaker, and it always feels a bit awkward and intrusive. I certainly don't want to put anyone else in that position, or have my own private chats become public listening. Then there's the whole 'kids' aspect, which is a huge factor for me. Little ears are always listening, aren't they? When I'm on speakerphone, not only are my kids exposed to adult conversations that might not be appropriate for them, but it also teaches them that it's okay to share personal conversations publicly. I want to instill good communication habits and a sense of respect for privacy in them. Plus, imagine trying to have a serious conversation with a client or a doctor while my little ones are running around in the background, yelling or asking questions. It's incredibly distracting for everyone involved, and it makes it hard to focus on the call. I prefer to step away or use headphones to ensure I can give my full attention and maintain a calm environment for my children. It’s also about setting boundaries and showing them that some communication is private and deserves a dedicated space. Beyond privacy and kids, there's the general etiquette. I often notice people using speakerphone in places like grocery stores, waiting rooms, or even public transport. The background noise can be really disruptive, and hearing snippets of someone else's conversation can be really irritating. It’s a small thing, but being mindful of how our actions affect others is really important to me. So, what do I do instead? My go-to solution is usually a pair of trusty headphones. They offer excellent sound quality, keep my conversations private, and allow me to move around freely without disturbing anyone. If headphones aren't an option and I need to be hands-free, I'll make sure I'm in a truly private space, like a closed room, where no one else can hear. It's about being intentional with my communication choices. Ultimately, for me, saying 'no speaker phone for me' isn't about being rigid; it's about being considerate. It's about valuing privacy, setting a good example for my kids, and being mindful of the people around me. It's just a small way to create a more peaceful and respectful environment, both for myself and for others.
