Here’s a new song I wrote based on a poem that came to my mind as I was sitting and thinking in my home office. I was reflecting back on being a kid and being blissfully unaware of the evils and dangers of the world; we played outside without fear of consequence and waiting for the dinner bell to ring to know it was time to get inside. Another aspect of this poem/song is about the passing of my dog in October 2025. Holding him while he took his last breath felt like the last piece of “innocence” I lost while the reality of the mortality of this world hit me. There’s something in you that changes when you have a strong soul-bond and it no longer has a physical home. My brain sometimes romanticizes some of these darker aspects in a creative way, like this poem put to music. It’s about the briefness of the world and how irreplaceable our loved connections are — and about pondering the potential of reconnection in the afterlife.
Anyway, I’ve been told I overthink. Hope you enjoy “What Do I Do?”
Thanks for listening. 🎶
Creating a song from personal reflections can be an incredibly cathartic experience, especially when it touches on themes as profound as loss and the fleeting nature of life. Writing 'What Do I Do?' appears to be an intimate journey through memories of a carefree childhood alongside the deep pain and transformation that comes with losing a cherished pet. In my own experience, pets often embody a soulful connection that becomes part of our emotional landscape, and their passing can indeed feel like a loss of innocence—the moment when we confront mortality more closely. The way the song transforms a poem into music also highlights the power of creative expression as a means to process complex emotions. When I’ve faced similar moments, putting feelings into art—whether through writing, music, or another form—helps give voice to experiences that can be difficult to articulate otherwise. It allows a unique blend of nostalgia, grief, and hope to coexist. Moreover, the contemplation of reconnecting in the afterlife taps into a universal human desire for continuity and reunion beyond our physical existence. Many people, including myself at times, ponder these questions during moments of reflection or mourning. This adds philosophical depth to the song’s theme, encouraging listeners not only to grieve but also to find solace and meaning in the bonds that outlast life. The recurring references found in the OCR results such as "AWN," "PAWN," "SPAWN," and "RESPAWN" suggest a motif of cycles and rebirth, fitting seamlessly with the song's underlying themes. In gaming and storytelling, "respawn" means to come back again after dying, metaphorically echoing the idea of souls or connections returning or persisting beyond loss. For anyone who has navigated the delicate experience of losing a beloved companion or reflecting on childhood innocence, songs like 'What Do I Do?' offer both a mirror and a companion in solitude. They remind us that creative outlets enable healing, allowing us to honor the past while embracing the mysteries of what lies ahead.
