Fred and I had a brief disagreement about who should be using the trail, but eventually we worked things out and I made it to the lake.

And I do not care how times I’ve hiked this trail. It still manages to blow me away every time.

Despite the 9 miles and significant 2,400 feet elevation gain, the trail offers incredible scenery that keeps you motivated every step of the way. One of my favorite parts is arriving at the lake and being mesmerized by the vibrant turquoise water—it feels almost surreal, especially surrounded by rugged peaks like Dragontail Peak. The trail itself is a great challenge, but also rewarding for both casual hikers and seasoned adventurers. The climb up to Aasgard Pass, leading into the Core Enchantments, offers some of the most dramatic mountain views you'll find in Washington state. On one hike, I even encountered a very persistent mountain goat—which added a charming touch to the trek. Despite minor disagreements about trail usage, the journey’s natural beauty always brings a sense of peace and awe. If you love hiking in Washington or are looking for a trail that offers both physical challenge and stunning visuals, I highly recommend Colchuck Lake. Remember to pack plenty of water, sturdy hiking boots, and a camera to capture those unforgettable moments. Whether this is your first time or your tenth, this trail manages to blow you away every single visit.
