Planning a surprise Disney vacation takes a lot more preparation than many might expect. From my own experience organizing a trip for a family of six, the key is to have detailed to-do lists for everything—tickets, hotel reservations, park days, dining, and daily plans. This helps prevent the overwhelm that comes with trying to coordinate so many moving parts. When it comes to accommodations, choosing the right hotel can greatly impact your family's experience. The Howard Johnson Anaheim (Hojo) hotel is a fantastic 'good neighbor' option. It's Disney-themed with an amazing water park that kids absolutely love. Plus, it's only about an eight-minute walk from Disneyland, which is super convenient when you’re managing multiple children and strollers. Walking times might feel longer by the end of a fun-packed day, but the close proximity really helps. If you want to stay on-site, the Disneyland Hotel offers a classic Disney ambiance with unique Pixar-themed floors and a Finding Nemo pool that kids adore. It's a great choice for families wanting that full Disney immersion. The Pixar Place hotel is also a colorful, fun choice, especially for younger kids who enjoy being surrounded by their favorite characters throughout the hotel. Another on-site option is the Grand Californian Hotel, which impresses with luxury and its direct access to Downtown Disney. While it’s a beautiful, woodsy, California-themed resort, some might find it less whimsical compared to the others. Still, it’s an excellent choice for those wanting a premium experience. Aside from hotels, restaurant reservations inside the parks are crucial. Booking dining experiences early ensures you won’t miss themed meals or favorite characters. Bringing a daily plan with outfit ideas, road trip essentials, and packing lists reduces the day-of stress and helps cover all bases. Overall, my biggest piece of advice for planning a surprise Disney vacation for a large family is to start early and stay organized. Having separate lists for things you’ve never done before keeps your trip fresh and exciting. It’s also important to involve the kids by dropping little hints or clues to build their anticipation without ruining the surprise. Planning a trip like this truly makes the magical moments even more special once revealed.
