My Travel Advisor Betrayal List

... Read moreBuilding on my original list, I wanted to share a few more 'betrayals' that pop up, and maybe some tips for fellow travelers or aspiring advisors out there. It’s not always glamorous, folks! Sometimes, even for a seasoned travel expert, things go sideways, and it's those moments that truly test your patience. First up, let's talk about misleading hotel photos. Ever booked a dreamy resort only to arrive and find the 'ocean view' was a sliver of blue between two buildings, or the 'spacious' room was barely big enough for your suitcase? Been there, had clients furious – and it's a betrayal of expectations! My advice? Always check recent traveler reviews, especially those with real photos, and even Google Street View if available. The professional shots often hide the less-than-glamorous realities. Then there's the agony of slow Wi-Fi. In this digital age, slow Wi-Fi feels like a personal attack! Especially when a client needs to work remotely or just wants to share their amazing vacation snaps. It's tough when you've promised connectivity and the hotel delivers dial-up speeds. I always tell my clients to consider a portable hotspot or to double-check recent reviews specifically mentioning Wi-Fi speed, especially if it's crucial for their trip. Rainy itineraries are another classic. Mother Nature doesn't care about our perfectly planned trips. A week of rain can turn a dream beach trip into a soggy disappointment. This isn't really a betrayal by anyone, but it feels like one from the universe! My advice? Always have a Plan B for indoor activities or be ready to embrace the elements with a good raincoat and a positive attitude. Flexibility is key when the weather doesn't cooperate. And let's not forget the infamous ghosting clients. You spend hours crafting the perfect itinerary, negotiating deals, making countless calls, and then… silence. No response, no booking confirmation, just crickets. It’s not just rude; it means wasted time and effort, and sometimes even lost booking fees for the advisor. A true professional betrayal of trust and hard work. Finally, the sting of unexpected fees. Those hidden resort fees, energy surcharges, or baggage fees not clearly disclosed until you're already committed? They sneak up on you like a ninja! As an advisor, I try my best to flag all potential additional costs upfront, but sometimes even we get surprised by last-minute policy changes or fees that weren't transparently listed until checkout. It’s a constant battle to keep up with all the little charges that can add up. Despite all these little betrayals and frustrations, I still love what I do! Every trip is an adventure, and learning from these moments makes me a better advisor. What are some of YOUR biggest travel frustrations or 'betrayals' you've faced? Let's commiserate!
