Northern Lights in Michigan

The best time to catch the aurora in Michigan, especially near the Mackinac Bridge, is typically during the late fall, winter, and early spring months (September to April), when the nights are longest and darkest. Aim for clear, moonless nights, as moonlight can wash out fainter displays. I always check the aurora forecasts from apps like My Aurora Forecast or Aurora Alerts, and join local Facebook groups dedicated to Northern Lights chasing in Michigan. They often post real-time updates on Kp index levels and potential sightings, which is super helpful. A Kp index of 4 or higher is generally good for Michigan. Now, for the million-dollar question: where’s the best spot to see them with the Mackinac Bridge? The beauty of the Straits of Mackinac is that you have great vantage points from both Mackinaw City (Lower Peninsula) and St. Ignace (Upper Peninsula).
