August, Old Friend
There’s something about late August and on, until the completion of another year. The rustling of the wind on a cooler night, the look of the darkened clouds, hanging low, just beyond the barn… impending fall.
The stirring I feel now in my gut and the tightness in my chest mark the thrill of anticipation and nostalgia of days gone by. The days that belong in the deepest recesses of my heart and mind. The start of the Christmas season, as I see it.
My birthday comes on the 25th and then it feels like there’s a fast-forward button being pressed all the way down…
Crowded Fall festivals on a too warm September day.
Cool, dark evenings.
Fires in a ring, sounds of visitors voices.
The spice of chili on the tip of my tongue. And, then, Halloween and Thanksgiving and Christmas and New Year’s. It goes by in a flash but it’s so full of moments and memories, too numerous to count.
Then, without warning, it’s over. And, I find myself in the darkness of winter. The stark, cold.
And, I’m in the waiting… for a late August night.
