私が柴山八幡社（柴山神社と呼ばれることもあるみたい）を訪ねていちばん印象に残ったのは、「木と神が見守る風景」という言葉がしっくりくる境内の空気でした。鳥居をくぐると、音がすっと遠のく感じ。大杉の下に立つと、日差しがやわらかくなって、深呼吸したくなります。「大杉の下で、時は祈る」という雰囲気そのままで、観光地の賑やかさとは違う癒しがありました。 豊後大野市で神社を探している人は、参拝のしやすさも気になると思います。私は混雑を避けたくて日中の早めの時間に行きましたが、境内は静かで落ち着いて回れました。参拝するときは、手水があれば清めてから、二礼二拍手一礼の基本で。由緒として「宇佐神宮の分霊を祀る」と伝わる点も、八幡社らしさを感じられて個人的に好きなポイントです。 そしてこの場所を語るなら、大野川と河岸段丘の景観は外せません。河岸段丘は、川が長い時間をかけて土地を削ったり、運んだ土砂を積もらせたりしながら、地面が階段みたいに段々になった地形のこと。ざっくり言うと、①川が平らな土地（昔の川原）をつくる→②地面が少し持ち上がったり、川が深く削れたりして、川原が高い場所に取り残される→③これが何度も起きて段々が増える、というイメージです。柴山八幡社の周辺は大野川の河岸段丘が広がっていて、対岸の国道326号あたりから眺めると、段丘が重なった立体感が分かりやすい日があります。 「海岸段丘」との違いも気になって調べたのですが、こちらは波（海食）や海面変動でできる“海沿いの段々”。一方、柴山八幡社周辺で実感しやすいのは“川がつくる段々＝河岸段丘”です。地形が分かると、参拝＋景色の楽しみが一段増えるのでおすすめ。 最後に、検索でよく見かける「豊後大野市生活応援券 使える店」について。神社そのものはお店ではないので応援券の利用は難しいことが多いですが、参拝前後の食事や買い物で使える店舗があるはず。最新の対象店舗は時期で変わるので、市の公式情報や配布される加盟店一覧を確認してから動くと安心でした。参拝とあわせて、豊後大野市の街歩きもゆっくり楽しめます。
