Mr Meow Meows journey through kidney disease

... Read moreIt's incredibly tough when your furry family member faces a serious illness like end-stage renal disease (ESRD). I'm sharing a bit about Mr. Meow's journey, especially focusing on the visible signs we've encountered, hoping it might help other pet parents. Often, recognizing these subtle changes is the first step in providing comfort and care. One of the most concerning things we've noticed is how ESRD affects a cat's overall appearance and demeanor. For us, the phrase 'end stage renal disease face' really resonates, not just as a literal facial change, but as a general look of discomfort or decline. We saw Mr. Meow start to lose weight, and this became evident in his face – his cheekbones became more prominent, and his eyes, once so bright, sometimes appeared a bit sunken, a tell-tale sign of dehydration. His beautiful fur also started to look dull and unkempt, despite his best efforts to groom, which is another common symptom of their body struggling to process toxins. Beyond these physical changes, his energy levels plummeted. He'd often look lethargic, resting more than usual, and his once playful expressions were replaced with a more subdued, sometimes even pained, look. We also had to keep a close eye on his mouth. Uremic breath, a foul odor, became noticeable, and sometimes he'd develop small ulcers around his gums, making eating uncomfortable. Pale gums can also be an indicator of anemia, which often accompanies advanced kidney disease. Caring for him on day 19 of his treatments, and beyond, has meant closely monitoring these changes and working with our vet to manage his symptoms. This includes making sure he's hydrated – sometimes with subcutaneous fluids – and finding kidney-friendly foods he'll actually eat. Providing a warm, quiet, and comfortable space is crucial. It’s a constant learning curve, filled with ups and downs, and we rely on all the prayers and encouragement we can get. Every day is a gift, and our goal is to ensure Mr. Meow has the best quality of life possible, even through this challenging time.
