IKEA Upgrade
Transforming a plain an IKEA Rast Dresser with decoupage and paint. #ikeadiy #paint #painting #decoupage #decoupagepaper
I absolutely love giving affordable IKEA pieces a personalized touch, and my latest project – transforming a simple IKEA Rast dresser – was incredibly rewarding! If you're looking for clever IKEA hack ideas or a budget-friendly way to upgrade your bedroom furniture, this is definitely for you. The Rast dresser, while functional, can be a bit plain, but that's what makes it the perfect blank canvas for creativity. Here’s how I took it from basic to beautiful, plus some extra tips I picked up along the way! Why the Rast Dresser is a DIY Dream The IKEA Rast is a fantastic starting point for any beginner DIYer. It's inexpensive, made of unfinished solid wood (making it easy to paint!), and its simple design means it can be adapted to almost any style. I was looking for a new dresser for my bedroom, and instead of buying something new, I decided to give this little gem a complete rast makeover. It's incredible what a bit of effort can do to dresser wood! Getting Ready for Your Rast Paint Job Before diving into the fun part, prep is key for a lasting rast paint finish. I started by lightly sanding the entire dresser to give the paint something to adhere to. Don't skip this step! Then, a thorough wipe-down with a damp cloth to remove all dust is essential. For IKEA furniture, especially unpainted wood like the Rast, a good primer is your best friend. It helps the paint stick evenly and prevents any wood tannins from bleeding through. I chose a high-quality chalk paint for its matte finish and ease of use, but acrylic or even a good quality spray paint designed for wood would work beautifully too. Mastering Decoupage: My Favorite Part! Decoupage is where the real magic happens, transforming a plain ikea dresser into a statement piece. I found some gorgeous decoupage paper that perfectly matched the aesthetic I was going for. The trick is to apply the paper smoothly without bubbles. I generously applied a layer of wallpaper adhesive (like the PRO-880 ULTRA® Clear Strippable Wallpaper Adhesive I found, which works wonders for adhesive paper for furniture) onto the dresser surface where I wanted the paper to go. Then, carefully lay down your paper, smoothing it out with your hands or a soft roller from the center outwards. Once it's dry, I applied a few coats of decoupage medium or a clear sealer over the paper to protect it and give it a durable finish. This step is crucial for longevity and making those decoupage ikea furniture projects truly shine. Beyond Paint & Decoupage: More IKEA Rast Hack Ideas While paint and decoupage are fantastic, there are so many other ways to elevate your IKEA Rast. If you're into ikea alien ideas (as in, unique and standout transformations!), consider these additions: Hardware Upgrade: Swapping out the basic wooden knobs for stylish metal pulls or ceramic handles can instantly change the dresser's personality. Add Legs: Simple screw-in furniture legs can give your Rast a more elevated, custom look, lifting it off the floor and making it feel less 'IKEA'. Trim & Molding: For a more luxurious, built-in aesthetic, try adding thin decorative wood trim or molding to the drawer fronts before painting. It creates a beautiful paneled effect. Drawer Liners: Even the inside can get a makeover! Line drawers with pretty contact paper or fabric for a touch of hidden luxury. My newly transformed dresser for bedroom now feels completely custom and reflects my personal style. It’s amazing how a weekend project can breathe new life into a piece of furniture. Give it a try – you might just surprise yourself with what you can create!
