Why do dogs like to stretch long at us when they open their doors?
The front legs stretched forward, the chest attached to the ground, the bottom pointed to the sky, held on as if bowing, and then wagged their tails. Many people read this: "Good to see us," which is not wrong, but the truth is much deeper and older.
The first is a simple stretch, as if we were lazy when we woke up. The dog that just got out of the bed loosened his muscles before running towards us.
The second is the social meaning, when it is slowly stretched out to someone he trusts, it means "I'm comfortable, I'm relaxed, and I want to approach you," a sign of harmlessness, like smiling or waving a greeting in human language.
The amazing thing is that this posture is from Play Bow, or the same posture that wolves, jackals and coyotes have used for tens of thousands of years. Animal behaviorists point out that it is the most "rewarding" posture, which is stable enough to move in any direction, stretching their muscles and putting their heads lower than the other. This means "I'm not going to intimidate, I'm harmless." One posture says three things at the same time. The posture is really fast, bouncing, repeating, and bouncing away. Unlike the slow and lingering greeting posture, people just wake up.
How should we respond? Many people have heard that "Go home, don't pay attention to dogs" is actually outdated. But there is another precaution: the same "bottom of the sky, chest to the ground" posture.
