my process of painting a fish

Painting a fish like a trout can be a calming yet rewarding experience. From my personal journey, I found that starting with a rough sketch helps map out the composition, especially deciding where elements like the sky and water will meet. Although I forgot to photograph the initial sketch, refining it by going over the outlines multiple times gave me confidence in the structure. Adding details to the fish with precise colors and lighting brought the subject to life. I spent about five hours on the painting before completing the water and subtle fish splashes. One challenge I encountered was painting the clouds; I was initially unhappy with my first attempt, so I repainted them, which improved the overall atmosphere. Trees were added later to fill up negative space and create a balanced scene. A personal touch was including a dragonfly from the reference photo and my dad’s boat, making the artwork more meaningful. For artists trying this, patience is key—building up layers gradually and being willing to redo parts like clouds can greatly enhance the final piece. The process not only improves technical skills but also allows creative storytelling through nature-inspired artwork.
