Six months after finishing school can feel like both a long and short time, depending on how you look at it. Personally, I was surprised at how much joy I found once school was over. The transition period is often filled with mixed emotions—relief, uncertainty, and excitement for what’s next. During this time, I had the unique experience of working as a float nurse, which really tested my adaptability and resilience. Floating between units, especially surgical floors like the 5th floor where I cared for two patients at once, taught me a great deal about teamwork and the fast-paced nature of healthcare environments. The roles of clinical nurse and health care assistant require quick learning and compassion, and through these challenges, I discovered strengths I didn’t know I had. It's important to acknowledge that finishing school doesn’t mean the journey of growth stops. For many, like me, it marks the beginning of practical application of knowledge in real-world settings—something both thrilling and nerve-wracking. Embracing this new phase, with all its ups and downs, can lead to personal satisfaction and professional development. If you’re transitioning from school yourself, try to stay open to new roles and experiences. Each challenge you face, like managing patients in different hospital units, builds your skill set and confidence. Remember to celebrate your milestones, even the small ones, and be patient with yourself as you adjust to life after school and all it brings.
