If you're looking for a unique escape that feels like a trip abroad without leaving the US, this is definitely it. This isn't just any park; it's a meticulously maintained slice of Dutch heritage, centered around the magnificent De Zwaan, an authentic 250-year-old Dutch windmill. Seriously, standing next to this historic brick windmill, you can almost hear the clogs clattering! It was originally brought over from the Netherlands and is the only authentic, operating Dutch windmill in the United States, still grinding grain today. My absolute favorite part was wandering through the stunning gardens. Depending on the season, you'll be greeted by a vibrant explosion of colors. I visited when the delicate white and pink flowers were in full bloom throughout the sprawling grounds, and if you plan your trip for spring, you'll be treated to thousands upon thousands of blooming tulips! The paved paths are perfect for a leisurely stroll, leading you over charming wooden bridges and alongside picturesque canals, making every corner a fantastic photo opportunity. I even spotted a couple getting engaged on one of the bridges, which was just the sweetest thing and perfectly captures the romantic vibe of the place. It's truly a spot where memories are made. Beyond the iconic windmill and beautiful floral displays, you'll discover a collection of traditional Dutch-style buildings. These charming structures, with their red roofs and colorful shutters, add so much character and truly immerse you in Dutch culture. You can even explore some of them, like the authentic Dutch carousel or the little organ museum. The general store on site is also a great spot for unique souvenirs. And yes, there are some friendly animals too; I saw a beautiful dark horse with a reddish mane grazing peacefully in a green field, viewed over a rustic wooden fence – a lovely, unexpected sight! For anyone planning a visit to Windmill Island Gardens, I’d offer a few personal tips to make your trip even better. Definitely wear comfortable walking shoes because you'll want to explore every nook and cranny of this expansive Dutch village. Bring your camera because the scenery, from the towering De Zwaan windmill to the intricate gardens, quaint street scenes, and charming Dutch-style buildings, is incredibly picturesque and begs to be photographed. While spring is famous for the tulips, I found the gardens beautiful in other seasons too, offering a serene and less crowded escape. Check their official website for current hours, admission fees, and any special events, as they can vary throughout the year. This Dutch gem in Holland, MI is more than just a destination; it's an educational and enchanting experience that truly transports you to another world. Don't miss out on this little piece of the Netherlands right here in Michigan!
