Drawing a Chocolate Dipped Strawberry

Hey art fam! You know how much I love drawing yummy treats, and nothing beats the challenge (and reward!) of making a chocolate-dipped strawberry look so real you could almost taste it. If you've been wanting to try drawing something realistic with your colored pencils, this is such a fun subject! First things first, always grab a good reference photo! I look for ones with clear lighting and a mix of glossy chocolate and textured strawberry. Then, I start with a very light sketch, just getting the basic shape of the strawberry and where the chocolate drips will be. Don't press hard; we want to build up layers! For the strawberry itself, I begin with the lightest reds first – think light red, salmon pink, or even a hint of orange for warmth. Then, I gradually build up depth by adding darker reds like crimson and scarlet, focusing on where shadows would naturally fall. For that juicy strawberry texture, I use tiny, circular strokes and sometimes even leave tiny speckles for the 'seeds' later. Don't forget to leave some areas lighter for the natural highlights! Now for the chocolate, which is truly the star! I lay down a medium brown as a base. To get that rich, dark chocolate look, I layer darker browns, even using a touch of black in the deepest shadows. The trick for melted, glossy chocolate is all about highlights and shadows! I use varying pressures with my browns, making sure to define those soft edges where the light catches. For the glossy shine, I carefully leave tiny white spaces or use a white colored pencil very lightly over the dark chocolate where the brightest light hits. Sometimes I even use a white gel pen for super sharp highlights, but you can achieve amazing results with just pencils. Pay close attention to how the chocolate flows and drips; it's not perfectly smooth, there's a natural curve and weight to it. This is where your drawing really comes to life! After building up your base colors for both the strawberry and chocolate, go back in and refine your highlights and shadows. Use a white or very light pink/yellow pencil to gently blend over the brightest parts of the strawberry, making it look plump and fresh. As mentioned, those tiny, sharp bright spots are crucial for the chocolate's gloss. And don't forget the shadow the strawberry casts on the surface below it. This grounds your drawing and makes it look like it's actually sitting there, not floating. I love using a colorless blender for super smooth transitions, especially on the strawberry, but you can also achieve beautiful blends by layering light colors over dark ones, or vice versa, with light pressure. Drawing with colored pencils is all about patience and layering. It's not a race! Take your time, step back often, and see what areas need more depth or shine.
