Summer is my favorite season and happens to be packed with so much drawing inspiration from plants,beach and sun the list is endless.
'Summer Fruit' was my prompt for this piece, so obviously I decided to draw watermelon slices. This fruit is juicy, vibrant and packed with so much colorful texture potential for drawing.

In addition to the stepwise approach shown, I found using alcohol markers like Ohuhu and Prismacolor Soft Core Pencils really elevated the texture and saturation when drawing watermelons. Starting with a simple pencil sketch to outline shapes helps ground your drawing before adding layers of green and pink markers. Shading deeper reds with the burnishing technique brings out the juicy feel of the fruit, while black markers add solid seed bases. For me, the magic was in blending colors gradually to build vibrancy without harsh lines. Adding white highlights with gel pens illuminated the texture and made the watermelon pop against toned gray paper. If you want to experiment beyond watermelon, try exploring other summer fruits like peaches or cherries using similar layering and shading methods. The key is practicing gradual color build-up and paying attention to light and shadow for depth. Overall, drawing fruit has become my go-to when I need a quick, colorful boost during artblock!
