Watch Me Slowly Get Better At Drawing Portraits.

MY ART JOURNEY

As a passionate kid who loved art and design, I hadn't drawn for almost two decades because, well... life just happened.🙃

But as you will see from the images above, I'm still a progressing artist and by no means perfect. I just love creating, learning and setting new goals for myself.

It wasn't until the summer of 2024 I got inspired to draw again after coming across some portrait drawing videos on social media and I was obsessed.

I started to take drawing portraits more seriously in October 2024 and I've been drawing ever since.

WHAT I HAVE IMPROVED ON AND HOW:

✏️ I have improved my drawing skill by regularly exercising my hand-eye co-ordination. I truly believe that daily drawing does enhance the connection between what eyes see and what the hands do therefore creating more precise and controlled movements.

✏️ I've improved my observation skills. I have gotten better at drawing what I see. This has also enhanced my focus to the details and shapes in my artwork. I've achieved this by going slow and being patient with every piece.

✏️ I've improved my fine motor skills with the help of daily drawing which has improved dexterity in my hands and fingers making pencil movement more controlled and precise.

✏️ I've improved my creative thinking which has encouraged me to explore different drawing mediums. Also, stepping out of my comfort zone and introducing charcoal into my arsenal of creative tools, has been a real game changer.

✏️ I've improved my shading ability by changing from using printer paper (I didn't know😄) to vellum paper but also through exercising mindfulness and focus. Paying attention more to the light source has been significantly useful in my finished drawings.

✏️Drawing daily (even if it's for 10 minutes) is a major component in improving drawing skill. It is still working for me while I continue to learn and grow.

🩷How would you describe your art journey so far?

🩷 And what improvements do you feel you've made?

... Read moreIt’s truly amazing to look back at my art journey and see how much I’ve grown, especially in portrait drawing! If you're just starting out or feeling stuck, I want to share a bit more about what really helped me, beyond just putting pencil to paper. One thing that dramatically improved my skills was dedicated observation. When I first started drawing again, my portraits, like my early Ada Lovelace sketch, were okay, but lacked depth. I realized to get to the point of capturing the likeness of someone like Albert Einstein or Mae Jemison, it’s all about truly seeing. I’d spend ages just looking at a reference photo, breaking down the face into basic shapes, understanding where the light hit, and noticing the subtle curves. For instance, getting the proportions right for Barack Obama's features, especially his ears, was a real challenge for me initially, but by slowing down and observing every detail, it became much easier. This focused observation is key for any portrait drawing with pencil if you want to achieve a genuine resemblance. Another game-changer was experimenting with my drawing improvement tools. Initially, I stuck to basic graphite pencils on regular printer paper, which limited my shading. But then I discovered vellum surface paper and it was a revelation! The smoother surface allowed for much more seamless blending and richer tones. And then came charcoal. Oh, charcoal! My first Kanye West charcoal portrait felt like a massive leap. It allowed for such deep, velvety blacks and smooth transitions that pencils just couldn't achieve as easily. If you're looking to add drama and realism, don't be afraid to try it. It’s definitely a step out of the comfort zone, but totally worth it. I remember the joy of seeing the texture and depth in my Abraham Lincoln drawing, with those distinct hair strokes, all thanks to a sharp pencil and eventually, charcoal techniques. And let's talk about the power of a sketchbook. For sketchbook ideas, don't overthink it! Mine started as just a place to practice daily, even if it was just for 10-15 minutes. It became a visual diary of my drawing improvement. Seeing my progression from early sketches to more refined pieces like my MLK portrait, where I finally felt I nailed the likeness and texture, was incredibly motivating. It's not just about finished pieces; it's about the process. Filling up a chunky sketchbook with studies, quick sketches, and even failed attempts is invaluable. It helps build that hand-eye coordination and muscle memory. Finally, don't shy away from drawing challenging subjects. My journey included everything from historical figures like Abraham Lincoln and MLK to contemporary personalities. Each one taught me something new about capturing unique features, expressions, and even the subtle differences in skin texture. When you approach drawing a famous portrait artist's pencil drawing or even just a challenging face, think about the essence you want to capture. It's not just copying; it's interpreting. Remember, every stroke is a step towards becoming a better artist. Keep creating, keep learning, and most importantly, enjoy your unique art journey!

Sometimes growth doesn’t look like fireworks. It looks like this — a box of tangled threads slowly becoming neat little rows of purpose. 🌈🧵 I didn’t learn overnight how to pick colors, organize tones, or keep my threads from turning into chaos (and knots that made me wanna cry, let’s be honest

Art is more than just “pretty” portraits
There is way more to art than just making pretty or cool paintings. Sometimes it can be “boring” stuff like this. Even this though is impressive and a part of art history. Someone had to create these paints artists use and here’s an example of one color 🤷🏾‍♂️ First word also supposed to be li

One thing I LOVE about my 50mm lens is the ability to bring my f stop all the way down to f 1.4! Remember it’s easy to bring it down that low but adjust your shutter to accommodate it. These examples were taken on a super sunny day, so my shutter speed was super fast. And ISO super low. What
