​🥝 Draw Realistic Kiwis! Pencil + Marker Art

As an artist who loves capturing the beauty of everyday objects, drawing realistic fruit has always been a particular passion of mine. When I decided to tackle a kiwi, I knew it would be a fun challenge, especially getting that unique texture and vibrant interior just right. From my experience, the key to making any fruit drawing pop is understanding how light interacts with its surface and building up layers thoughtfully. One of the biggest lessons I learned early on was the power of good reference photos. I always try to find a few high-quality images of kiwis, cut open and whole, to observe every detail – the subtle color variations, the arrangement of the tiny black seeds, and even the direction of the fuzz on the skin. Don't be afraid to zoom in! For this kiwi drawing, I found that starting with a very light pencil sketch, almost invisible, helped me get the proportions right without having to erase too much later. An 'eraser' is, of course, an artist's best friend, but minimizing its use keeps your paper fresh. Choosing the right materials also makes a significant difference. I've experimented with various mediums, but for a realistic look, I keep coming back to a combination of alcohol markers and colored pencils. For my kiwi, I found that using a 'Dark Yellow' alcohol marker for the initial base of the skin and a 'Bud Green' for the flesh laid down a smooth, even color that the colored pencils could really grip onto. This base layer creates a luminous effect that’s hard to achieve with pencils alone. I also keep a 'white gel pen' handy for those final, tiny highlights that can really make a difference, like the sparkle on the seeds or a slight glint on the juicy flesh. When it came to adding the details with colored pencils, I focused heavily on layering. For the green flesh, I used a blend of yellow, green, and even a touch of white 'colored pencils' to create that starburst pattern. It's not just about one green; it's about building up depth with multiple shades. And for the seeds, after blocking them in with a 'black alcohol marker', I went back with a fine-tipped 'black pencil' to add individual seed details and very subtle reflections. Having a sharp point on your 'colored pencil' is crucial here, so a good 'sharpener' is indispensable. Now, for the part that I personally found the hardest: the fuzzy brown skin. This is where patience really pays off. I layered various shades of brown, green, and yellow pencils. Instead of just drawing lines, think about creating short, irregular strokes that mimic individual hairs. Blending is important, but don't over-blend to the point where you lose the texture. I found that using the darkest brown shades for the very shortest, most concentrated strokes at the edges gave it that authentic fuzzy look. It took a few tries, but the more you observe actual kiwi skin, the more intuitive it becomes. Don't forget that a 'cream-colored pencil' can be used to lighten areas or blend very subtly, adding to the softness. Remember, art is a journey, and every drawing is an opportunity to learn and refine your techniques!
