Working with oil pastels to create a purple sunset is such a satisfying artistic experience. One thing I’ve learned is that having a variety of purple shades really elevates the depth and vibrancy of the sky. When I tried this technique, I noticed how layering and softly blending different purples—from light lilac to rich violet—creates a dreamy, atmospheric effect. Using mixed media paper makes a big difference because it holds the pastel pigments well. I found that lightly sketching the horizon line with an HB pencil helped establish the composition before applying colors. Also, taping the edges kept my drawing neat and gave a clean border — a small trick that really polished the final look. Blending tools like tissues, Q-tips, or blending stumps can soften the edges between color layers. However, some of my favorite effects came from simply using my fingers, which warmed the pastels and allowed smoother transitions. Don’t worry about getting your hands stained—it’s part of the fun and a sign of hands-on creativity! If you’re using Mungyo soft oil pastels (as I did), you’ll find these pastels are vibrant and blend beautifully. Their quality contributes to a smooth application and helps maintain rich pigment intensity after blending. For aspiring artists aiming to master oil pastel sunsets, I recommend experimenting with color layering and blending techniques. Don’t rush; building up layers gently adds dimension. Plus, capturing the subtle shifts in purple tones at sunset adds a magical touch to your work. Lastly, finishing your artwork with a light fixative spray can protect the pastel from smudging, preserving your beautiful purple sky for years to come. Happy drawing and enjoy the process of turning your canvas into a lilac dreamscape!

This is gorgeous.
