A social psychologist from Harvard University.
The experiment was called "Small-World Experiment."
He sent a letter from a participant in Omaha, Nebraska, forwarding it to "a man who was in Boston."
By having each person pass it on only to "someone who knows directly."
Results: The letter reached the target by an average of 6 steps (through 6 intermediaries).
This work became the starting point of the phrase.
