Writer's quote of the day.

... Read moreThat Paula Danziger quote really got me thinking, especially since the article itself is just the quote! It talks about how 'Good writing is remembering detail. Most people want to forget.' That last part, 'Most people want to forget,' really resonated with me. Why do we try so hard to push certain memories away, especially the 'painful or embarrassing or silly' ones she mentions? From what I understand, our brains are actually wired to forget. It's a natural process that helps us prioritize new information and prevent cognitive overload. We forget easily for various reasons: sometimes memories just fade over time if they’re not revisited, a process called decay. Other times, new information interferes with old memories, making them harder to retrieve. And then there's motivated forgetting, where we unconsciously or consciously suppress unpleasant memories – exactly what Danziger is warning writers against! It’s interesting to think of forgetting not as a flaw, but as a survival mechanism. But for a writer, it can feel like a huge obstacle. This brings me back to Danziger’s wisdom: 'Don't forget things that were painful or embarrassing or silly. Turn them into a story that tells the truth.' This isn't just about memory; it's about courage. As a budding writer myself, I often find myself shying away from those raw, imperfect moments. But what she's saying is that those are precisely the details that give writing its power and authenticity. They make a story relatable and deeply human. So, how do we, as writers, combat this natural tendency to forget and embrace those details? I've been trying a few things. Journaling regularly is a big one – it’s like creating a personal archive of every thought, feeling, and minor event. Even jotting down quick notes on my phone throughout the day helps capture those fleeting 'silly' or 'emabrrassing' moments before they vanish. I also find that engaging my senses when recalling an event helps; what did I see, hear, smell, taste, feel? That sensory 'detail' is key. Another famous author, Joan Didion, once said, 'I write entirely to find out what I'm thinking, what I'm looking at, what I see and what it means. What I want and what I fear.' This echoes Danziger's sentiment about telling the truth through story. By actively remembering and articulating those difficult details, we're not just creating content; we're processing our own experiences and, in turn, offering a mirror to our readers. It’s hard work, no doubt, to confront those 'painful' things, but the reward is a story that truly resonates. So, next time you're tempted to let a memory slip away because it's uncomfortable, think of Paula Danziger and challenge yourself to write it down. You might just uncover your most powerful story yet.
