Gentlefrog painting clips 🐸

Hey everyone! So glad you're interested in painting cute watercolor toads – they're one of my favorite subjects! When I started this piece (the one you see in the clips!), I really wanted to capture that gentle, slightly bumpy texture they have, without making them look scary. First things first, let's talk about materials. For a successful watercolor toad, good paper makes all the difference. I usually go for cold-press watercolor paper, around 140lb (300gsm), because it handles water beautifully without buckling too much. As for paints, I swear by good quality artist-grade watercolors. For this particular toad, I used some of my favorite Othello watercolors – their greens and browns are just so rich and easy to blend, which is essential for capturing those natural amphibian tones. Brushes? A medium round brush (size 6 or 8) is great for general washes and shaping, and a smaller, pointed brush (size 2 or 3) is perfect for those tiny details like eyes or subtle skin patterns. My process usually starts with a very light pencil sketch – just enough to get the basic shape and proportions right. I don't press too hard, as watercolor is quite transparent and pencil lines can show through. Then, I move to the first wash. For the toad's body, I often start with a very diluted layer of a warm yellow-green, letting it dry completely. This creates a luminous base. After that, it's all about layering! I slowly build up the colors, adding shades of olive green, earthy browns, and even a touch of muted orange or red in some areas to give it depth and character. The key here is patience – let each layer dry before adding the next to avoid muddy colors. To get that wonderful bumpy skin texture, I use a combination of techniques. Sometimes, while a wash is still slightly damp, I'll gently dab a crumpled piece of tissue paper or a dry sponge to lift a little pigment, creating natural-looking highlights. Other times, I use a dry brush technique with a slightly darker, thicker paint to add tiny dots or short strokes, mimicking the texture. Don't forget the eyes! They're often the focal point. I usually paint them with a darker, more intense color and add a tiny white highlight after everything else is dry, to make them sparkle with life. And for the background? I usually keep it simple to make the toad pop. A soft, wet-on-wet wash of blues or gentle greens can create a lovely blurry effect that puts all the focus on our little amphibian friend.
