“Natural” bridal makeup and what it actually means
What brides often think it means:
— looking like yourself
— a “no makeup” makeup look
— soft and minimal, yet still bridal and polished
What it means to a makeup artist:
— carefully layering products and using techniques to make makeup look effortless
— not the absence of makeup
— not necessarily using fewer products
— enhancing your features so you still look like you, just elevated
The reality is that makeup tones and colours often get washed out in photos and under harsh banquet lighting. So while you may love the idea of “natural” bridal makeup, it may not actually look the way you imagine it would in person or on camera.
And because every bride is different, the definition of “natural” is different too. I’ve had clients send me AI-generated “natural” makeup references that would actually look quite glam in real life. There’s nothing wrong with that at all — but when it happens, it’s also part of the MUA’s job to point out when a reference photo may be AI-generated or heavily edited. 🤍
A few tips when sending makeup references:
— Try to source real bridal photos from MUAs’ portfolios, as many images nowadays are heavily edited or AI-generated.
— Communicate openly with your MUA about the look you want, your skin type, and your comfort level before and during your trial so expectations can be aligned properly.
— Trust the professional recommendations of the MUA you chose. A good artist considers your features, lighting, photography, and overall bridal styling — not just the reference photo alone. ✨
