my first time annotating!

2024/4/6 Edited to

... Read moreSo you're diving into the world of book annotation for the first time – that's amazing! I totally get the excitement, especially when it's for a reread of a beloved book like 'Powerless.' When I first started, I was a bit overwhelmed, but now it's become such a cozy part of my reading routine. It's all about making the book your own and deepening your connection with the story. For anyone looking to create those beautiful, insightful 'aesthetic notes' you see everywhere, or just want to know how to effectively 'annotate with me,' here are some things I've found super helpful. These tips are perfect whether you're studying for a class or just enriching your personal reading experience. First off, let's talk tools! You don't need much to start, but a good set of pens and highlighters in various colors is a game-changer. I love having different shades to easily distinguish between thoughts. And sticky notes – these are your best friends! They're perfect for jotting down longer thoughts or marking a page without writing directly on it. This way, you can add extensive notes about character development or plot twists without cluttering the page. One of the best tips I got was to create a *color-coded key*. This makes your annotations incredibly organized and visually appealing. For example, like the setup you might see with a key for 'love/romance,' 'scary/intense' moments, or 'other' general observations. I usually pick a color for powerful quotes, another for character development, one for plot twists or *foreshadowing*, and sometimes a specific color for my emotional reactions – like when something just makes me think 'cool'! Don't feel pressured to mark every single line. Focus on what stands out to YOU. This could be: Quotes: Lines that resonate, are beautifully written, or reveal something important about the story or characters. Character Insights: When a character says or does something that reveals their personality, growth, or motivations. Plot Points: Key events, mysteries, or turning points in the narrative. Themes: Any recurring ideas, symbols, or motifs that you notice throughout the book. Reactions: Your personal thoughts, feelings, or questions as you read. For instance, if a character is described as 'Completely Ordinary' but you suspect there's more to them, jot it down! Or if a character uses a sweet endearment like 'darling', you might want to highlight that connection and consider its significance. Since you're rereading 'Powerless,' think about what you want to focus on. Are you looking for clues you missed the first time? Character arcs? The world-building? Having a loose goal can guide your annotation process without making it feel like a chore. It transforms passive reading into an active, engaging journey. Remember, there's no 'right' way to annotate. It's your book, your experience. The goal is to enhance your reading, not complicate it. So grab your supplies, put on some cozy music, and just start. I'd love to hear what tips you discover along the way – let's share our aesthetic notes and make our reading journeys even better!

BookTok Hates my Annotating
Okay maybe BookTok doesn’t care. Really I don’t care either. But annotating is one of my favorite things to do as I read! I don’t like to highlight or mark up my books. I was taught from a young age not to write in books, and it’s stuck with me. Which is why annotating tabs and clear sticky not
