Books That Raised Me
I saw a couple people doing this on TikTok and wanted to join. So glad I started reading again in 2022.
You Made a Fool of Death with Your Beauty by Akwaeke Emezi got me back into reading. What book brought you back?
It's truly incredible how books can become silent companions throughout our lives, shaping our perspectives and understanding of the world from the earliest age. Reflecting on my own journey, I realize just how many stories have played a pivotal role in who I am today. It started with those 'IM JUST A BABY' days, where picture books weren't just entertainment but foundational lessons. I remember the pure joy of 'Chrysanthemum' teaching kindness, the wonder of 'The Snowy Day' bringing winter magic to life, and the playful rhythm of 'Chicka Chicka Boom Boom.' These weren't just simple tales; they were my first teachers, sparking imagination and a love for narrative. As I grew into an 'IM A COOL KID,' my literary world expanded dramatically. The 'Magic Tree House' series whisked me away on countless adventures, igniting my curiosity about history and different cultures. 'Junie B. Jones' and 'Arthur' helped me navigate the often-confusing landscape of friendships and school with humor and relatability. And who could forget the groundbreaking, sometimes uncomfortable, truths found in Judy Blume's books? They felt like a secret guide to growing up, addressing topics I was just starting to understand. Middle school brought more complex narratives that truly began to challenge my thinking. 'A Series of Unfortunate Events' taught me resilience through dark humor, while 'The Secret Life of Bees' and 'Esperanza Rising' opened my eyes to different worldviews and historical contexts, sparking empathy and understanding for lives far different from my own. Then came the 'MANDATORY, BUT I LIKED IT' phase in high school. Classics like 'Their Eyes Were Watching God' and 'Fahrenheit 451' might have been assigned, but their profound messages about identity, freedom, and society truly stuck with me, changing how I saw the world. Even denser reads like 'Wuthering Heights' offered glimpses into intense human emotions and complex relationships that broadened my emotional literacy. It's common for many of us to hit a 'CONNECTION LOST' period, as I did from 2017-2021 after graduation. Life gets busy, and reading for pleasure can feel like a luxury that falls by the wayside. But finding that one book that reignites the spark is truly magical. For me, 'You Made a Fool of Death with Your Beauty' was that book – it pulled me back in completely. Discovering contemporary voices like those in 'Homegoing' or 'Seven Days in June' reminds me that powerful, transformative stories are always out there, waiting to be found. These 'must reads' aren't just recommendations; they're experiences that can shift your perspective and enrich your life. If you're looking for your next 'life-changing book,' don't be afraid to step out of your comfort zone. Explore different genres, follow recommendations from diverse voices, or even revisit old favorites. Sometimes, a book like 'Sapiens' or 'Thinking, Fast and Slow' (if you're into non-fiction that reshapes thought) can offer a completely new framework for understanding the world. Whether it's a gripping thriller like 'The Girl With The Dragon Tattoo' from my 'YOUNG ADULT DAYZZ???' or a profound literary work, every book has the potential to leave its mark and continue to raise us, one story at a time. What book will be next for you?
