Pants
The WIP prequel novella hit a stall because, well, I pants’d more than I’m used to. To avoid even longer delays due to my more familiar extensive planning phases, I decided to just start writing the darn thing - which was good to get the motor running, but then I began doing donuts in my mental parking lot. That being said, I’m directionless no more as a few trips to my Mind Palace has produced an actual finish to this crazy story I have put into motion. The brakes are off now!
Writing without a clear endpoint, known as 'pantsing,' can be both liberating and challenging for authors. Many writers face stalls in their projects when their usual structured planning phases are bypassed, leading to moments of confusion or going in circles mentally. However, this spontaneous writing style can also be a powerful tool to unlock creativity and generate momentum when used effectively. If you find yourself doing "donuts in your mental parking lot," as some authors describe, it may help to create a mental space or "Mind Palace" to organize scattered ideas. Techniques like mind mapping, free writing, or recording voice notes can support gathering your thoughts without the pressure of strict outlines. Importantly, don’t shy away from starting a project even if the ending isn’t clear. The process of writing itself often reveals the story’s direction. Embrace the setbacks as part of your growth, and use mini-goals or daily writing targets to keep the momentum going. Ultimately, turning off the intellectual "brakes" and allowing the story to flow can lead to surprising story arcs and deeper character development. Writing authentically and persistently can transform a stalled project into a completed work. Many successful authors incorporate "pantsing" into their writing habits to balance planning with creative freedom, proving it a legitimate approach to storytelling.
