Being a 80’s baby

Thinking about growing up in the 90’s after being born in the 80s is beginning to make me realize that maybe our parents weren’t that great afterall #joshpray #standup #parenthood

... Read moreIt's a genuine reflection when you start to think about being an 80s baby who spent their formative years navigating the exciting, sometimes confusing, landscape of the 90s. The original post really hit home for me, making me ponder if our parents' approach to raising us was truly 'great' or just a product of its time. For many of us born in the 80s, our early childhood was a blur of neon colors, Saturday morning cartoons, and perhaps a simpler, less digitally-driven world. But as we transitioned into our school-age years, the 90s kicked in with its unique blend of grunge, pop culture, and the dawn of the internet. We were indeed 'the lost generation' in many ways, caught between the tail end of traditional parenting styles and the nascent stages of a hyper-connected future. There was no cell phone to call home if you missed the bus, no GPS to track your whereabouts after school, and certainly no social media to curate your playdates. I remember the freedom, yes, but also the sheer independence, sometimes bordering on self-reliance. Coming home to an empty house, fumbling with a house key on a string around my neck, and figuring out what to do until a parent got home was a common experience. We played outside until the streetlights came on, scraped our knees, settled our own arguments, and learned valuable lessons about resilience and resourcefulness without constant adult supervision. Was it neglect? Or was it just a different philosophy, one that fostered independence at an earlier age? This era also saw a massive shift in technology. We experienced the first clunky home computers, dial-up internet, and the rise of video games, but we still rode bikes, built forts, and explored the neighborhood woods. We were the last generation to truly understand a world without instant information, and the first to witness its rapid emergence. This unique position often left us feeling a little 'lost,' not quite fitting into the nostalgic narratives of earlier generations, nor fully aligning with the digitally native kids who came after. Reflecting on my own experiences, I realize that while there was immense freedom and creativity, there were also moments of loneliness and confusion. We often had to navigate challenges and figure things out for ourselves, which, looking back, probably shaped us into adaptable and quick-thinking adults. So, were our parents 'great'? Perhaps they were just doing the best they could with the tools and societal norms of the time. And in doing so, they inadvertently created a generation of independent thinkers who learned to forge their own paths, even if it meant feeling a little 'lost' along the way.
