Hey everyone! I'm so passionate about making our hair salons more sustainable, and I wanted to share some insights into effective waste disposal methods. It's amazing to think about how much waste a typical salon can generate, from hair clippings to chemical residue, and how much of it can actually be recycled or repurposed! When we first started looking into our salon's waste, it felt a bit overwhelming. We realized we were sending so much to landfill that didn't need to go there. Here’s a breakdown of what we found and how we tackled it, which might help you too! 1. Hair Clippings: Not Just Trash! Did you know hair can be repurposed? It’s fantastic for composting in gardens, or even for absorbing oil spills (Google 'matter of trust' or 'hair booms'!). We collect all our hair clippings separately. It’s a bit messy at first, but with a dedicated bin and clear signage, our team got on board quickly. Our local community garden was thrilled to take it! 2. Chemical Waste: The Tricky Part. This is often the most challenging, but also the most crucial. Things like leftover color, perm solutions, and keratin treatments can't just go down the drain. We partnered with a specialized waste management company (like Green Circle Salons, which is a fantastic resource!) that handles hazardous waste. They provide special bins and ensure everything is disposed of safely and responsibly. It felt like a big step up for our environmental impact. 3. Foils & Color Tubes: Yes, They're Recyclable! Aluminum foils and color tubes are 100% recyclable. We rinse them out and collect them in a separate bin. Many standard recycling centers accept them, but some specialized programs for salons can even process them with a little residue, making it even easier. It’s a simple change that makes a huge difference! 4. Plastics Galore: Product Bottles & More. Every salon uses tons of plastic bottles for shampoos, conditioners, styling products, and cleaning supplies. We encourage our team to fully empty and rinse these, then separate them into our plastic recycling bin. We also try to buy products in bulk or from brands with refillable options to cut down on plastic use overall. Every little bit helps! 5. PPE & General Waste. Gloves, disposable capes, and other personal protective equipment (PPE) can be a challenge. While some types of PPE aren't easily recyclable, we always look for eco-friendly alternatives where possible, like biodegradable gloves. For general waste that truly can't be recycled or repurposed, we ensure it's minimal and handled correctly. Our Experience & Tips: Start Small: Don't try to change everything overnight. Pick one or two waste streams to focus on first. Educate Your Team: Regular training and reminders are key. Make sure everyone understands why it's important and how to do it correctly. Clear Labeling: Use clear, colorful labels on your bins for different waste types. Pictures help too! Find Local Partners: Look for local recycling centers, community gardens, or specialized salon waste programs (like #GreenCircleSalons mentioned in the original post!) that can help you manage unique salon waste. Communicate with Clients: Let your clients know about your efforts! They often appreciate and support businesses that care about sustainability. We've even had clients tell us they chose us because of our green initiatives. It’s truly a journey, and we’re always learning and improving. But seeing 95% of our waste diverted from landfills makes all the effort worthwhile. It's not just good for the planet; it's also great for our salon's reputation and morale. Let's make our salons greener, one snip and squeeze at a time!
