Celebrating the International Day of Women and Girls in Science is so much more than just recognizing a date on the calendar; it’s about inspiring and empowering women at every stage of their STEM journey. From personal experience, growing up immersed in nature documentaries and spending countless hours exploring the outdoors cannot be overstated as a foundation for a lifelong passion in science. These early experiences feed curiosity and build appreciation for scientific discovery. As someone soon completing a Master’s degree in Geography, I can attest to the incredible impact of hands-on research, especially when learning to handle new datasets and apply coding skills in practical ways. It’s not just about the academic knowledge; it’s about gaining real-world skills that open doors in research, academia, and beyond. The celebration also reminds us that science thrives on diversity—women in labs, fields, and classrooms bring unique perspectives and drive innovation. Promoting STEM inclusion offers role models to the next generation of nerdy girls who might feel like outsiders otherwise. Remember the empowering motto from one of my favorite quotes: “I’m like a proton - always positive in a negative world.” Staying positive and persistent is key in STEM careers, where challenges and skepticism are often part of the journey. Supporting women in STEM means advocating for equitable access to education, mentorship, and career opportunities. After all, every data set coded, every field observation recorded, and every theory explored moves science forward—and women absolutely belong at the forefront of these advances.
