Pumping 101

As an exclusively pumping mom, I want to share some things that help me to maintain supply and also build it as well✨

✨Oats/Protein

Oatmeal has ALWAYA been one of my favorite breakfast meals so learning that it helps with maintaining your supply only made my want for it MORE! Howevwe you like your oats/oatmeal, enjoy a nice bowl in the morning

✨Sunflower Lecithin

With supplements, it’s a go each their own. It works for some and not for othera. But for me, it definitely works!! It always worth trying out

✨Power Pumping

Since a machine is not our baby, it doesn’t know exactly how much milk to produce. But with power pumping whilw youe baby is growing, you can trick your tatas into producing more. This also helps when our monthly cousin comes to visit or you experience a sudden supply drop

✨Pumping Schedule

Although I don’t use this particular schedule, have a schedule that works for you is VERY important. Bring a portable pump for on the go along with a cooler bag and some wipes. Having a hospital grade at home is vital as well.

✨Camomile Tea

I LOVE LOVE LOVE drinking this at night. I get the best sleep/rest. And that’s what our body needs the most!! Rest. Whether it’s your first or fifth baby, our bodies need rest at the end of the day.

Invest in a good hospital grade pump. Do your research. MAKE SURE YOU HAVE THE CORRECT FLANGE SIZE!! That will make or break your supply.

Don’t compare your supply to others. That’ll only send you in a down spiral. And more importantly, if you’re genuinely struggling, reach out to a lactation consultant. TikTok and YouTube can only get you so far.

Happy Pumping and Happy Holidays 🥰🎄

One effective dietary supplement that many find helpful is sunflower lecithin. According to its packaging details, sunflower lecithin contains 1200 mg per softgel and may help loosen fatty clogs in milk ducts, improving milk flow and possibly preventing painful blocked ducts. This supplement is a rich source of fatty acids and choline, supporting overall lactation health. Another valuable technique to boost milk production is power pumping, which mimics a baby's cluster feeding pattern. A typical power pumping session might involve pumping for 20 minutes, resting for 10 minutes, then pumping two more times for 10 minutes each with rests in between. This method encourages the body to increase milk supply, especially useful during supply drops or when preparing for growth spurts while the baby grows. Pumping schedules vary greatly depending on the baby's age and feeding demands. For newborns, a more frequent schedule of 7-10 sessions per day may be necessary, gradually decreasing as the baby grows older. It’s crucial to find a routine that fits your lifestyle and baby’s needs, supported by using a hospital-grade pump and, importantly, ensuring the correct flange size for comfort and efficiency. Incorrect flange size can negatively affect supply and cause discomfort. Additionally, lifestyle factors such as hydration, nutrition, and rest play a significant role. Drinking calming teas like chamomile can help improve sleep quality for the mother, which is essential for hormonal balance and milk production. Lastly, while advice from social platforms like TikTok and YouTube can be helpful for tips and community support, consulting a lactation consultant is highly recommended if there are ongoing struggles with supply. Personalized professional guidance ensures any underlying issues are addressed effectively. Combining these approaches—supplements like sunflower lecithin, power pumping, a consistent pumping schedule, proper pump equipment, and self-care—can significantly enhance a pumping mom’s ability to provide nourishing breast milk for her baby.
