Diploma or Degree, which one is better?why?

I(25F) graduated with a diploma in biomedical science. I have been working in the healthcare industry for the past 2 years. I never had any affinity for my course and wanted to quit from Year 1.1. However, a combination of not knowing what else to do, the financial burden of tuition loans, and parental pressures prevented me from doing so. In the course of these past few years that I've been working, I've come to understand that I really yearn to pursue something that I'm passionate about, which is art/design.

I've been contemplating doing a diploma to firmly establish my foundations since I don't have any design experience. But because I feel as though I've also "lost" a significant amount of time, my parents are urging me to pursue a degree in design communication instead (which I applied for at both Lasalle and NAFA). Now, my worry is that I might not be able to get in, and I don't know what else to do. Would opting for a diploma be a more suitable choice for a non-design background student like me?

I've endured a great deal of mental stress due to the pandemic and the frontline job that I had and didn't enjoy. I recently just resigned to focus on my portfolio, and even then, I'm not sure if it's good enough. That's why I'm preparing for the possibility that I might get rejected.

Has anyone else experienced similar things? What are my other options? :( I'm extremely lost and confused at this moment. If I don't get in, I'll just feel even more terrible for leaving a very stable job.

... Read moreChoosing between a diploma and a degree can be daunting, especially for those transitioning into new fields like design. In this competitive environment, understanding the differences in these educational paths is crucial. A diploma often provides practical skills and quicker entry into the workforce, which can be appealing for individuals with a non-design background. It offers hands-on experience and can serve as a stepping stone towards more advanced qualifications later on. Conversely, a degree typically delves deeper into theory and broader knowledge, potentially leading to more advanced career opportunities. Many employers look for candidates with formal educational qualifications, which a degree may signify. It's essential to consider your career goals: if you aspire to higher-level positions in design, a degree might be advantageous. For those who are already feeling lost, exploring community resources, mentorship, or online courses can provide additional insights and support. Networking with professionals in the design field can also shed light on what path alignments work best in real-world settings. Remember that many successful designers have varied educational backgrounds, and your experience and portfolio can often speak louder than your degree. Ultimately, the choice depends on personal circumstances, career aspirations, and financial considerations.
