IS LAYERING BODY CARE NECESSARY?

While it is absolutely not necessary to layer body butter and oils, this approach also depends on your skin type and preference.

Creams/body butters and oils have different purposes. Creams and body butters add hydration to the skin by infusing water binding ingredients, while oils seal in that hydration, forming a barrier and preventing that moisture from the cream/body butter from evaporating.

As a dry skin girl, I have noticed a difference when I layer my body creams and butters with oils. My skin feels, looks and stay hydrated longer than when I only apply a body butter only, not matter how moisturising that body butter may feel.

While body butters are rich in hydrating ingredients such as shea butter and glycerin, they mainly add moisture by attracting and binding water to the skin. However, this moisture can evaporate over time if not sealed properly. Using oils after applying body butter acts as a protective barrier that locks in hydration. Oils rich in linoleic acid, botanical extracts, and squalane are especially effective in enhancing the skin’s natural barrier function. Not only do they prevent transepidermal water loss, but they also nourish and soften the skin surface, providing a supple and glowing appearance. Many brands, including popular ones like Naturium’s The Glow Getter Multi-Oil Body Butter and Body Oil, offer formulations designed specifically for this layering approach. The combination of oil-infused butters and multi-oil blends maximizes skin nourishment. I’ve found that on days when I skip the oil layer, my skin feels less plump and drier by evening. Layering also allows for customization based on skin needs. For those with normal or oily skin, a single lightweight moisturizer might suffice. But for dry or mature skin types, adding an oil layer can significantly improve moisture retention and skin comfort. To get the best results, apply body butter immediately after showering to capture surface moisture and follow up with a lightweight botanical oil. Gently massage the oil in to create a protective shield that lasts hours. This routine adds a spa-like self-care element that I find both soothing and effective. In short, while layering body care is not mandatory for everyone, it’s a helpful technique for enhancing skin hydration and barrier health, especially if you experience dryness. Trying layered products with proven hydrating and sealing ingredients could transform your skincare routine for the better.
