Taking train in China

Booked tickets 15 days in advance on railway12306. If you are looking for specific or popular timing , do book the moment it opens because I realised a huge bulk gets sold out or maybe blocked out the moment it goes on sale. We went for the vip class when going to Suzhou from Shanghai railway station as the first class was sold out. It came with a pack of cookies, water or hot tea. Its more spacious than first class with a seperate compartment. Both these 2 stations are less busy compared to Hongqiao station. It was quite fast to use the manual check when you enter the station and bag check before you proceed to the gate for boarding. Boarding usually opens 20mins before train timing. It is possible to use the auto clearance here if the machine allows instead if manual entry. As for Hongqiao train station and Hangzhou dong station, it is alot more crowded so expect a longer queue. There is actually not much space to put luggage usually above, we put in infront of us instead, for longer journey might want to take business class instead. As long as you do not pack sharps or aerosols or flammable stuff, you should be to pass through security check smoothly. The waiting area outside the gates have sests but they are usually filled so you have to wait around n grab the seat immediately when someone stands up #hongqiao #shanghai #train #hangzhou #suzhou

... Read moreWhen planning your train journey between Shanghai and Suzhou, it’s helpful to keep in mind ticket prices and class differences. Second class tickets are generally affordable and widely available, though the VIP and business classes provide more comfort, especially for longer rides. You can check fares and availability directly on official platforms like railway12306 to ensure accurate pricing. For those wondering about purchasing high-speed rail (HSR) tickets from Hong Kong or through platforms like Qunar or Fliggy Alibaba, note that not all sites may support ticket sales for cross-border or Hong Kong-based journeys. It’s best to verify with official Chinese railway channels or apps to avoid any ticketing issues. If you’re traveling with luggage, Suzhou railway station offers luggage storage facilities, which can make your transit more convenient, especially if you have gaps between rides or want to explore the city hands-free. Stations vary significantly in size and crowd levels: Hongqiao is large and often crowded, while Shanghai East is quieter. Arriving early helps you manage security checks and boarding smoothly. Security procedures prohibit items like sharps, aerosols, or flammable goods, so packing accordingly will speed up your passage. On arrival areas, seating can be scarce; grabbing a spot quickly once boarding gates open or while waiting is advisable. Using automated clearance machines may be available at some stations for faster entry if you meet the criteria. In summary, early booking, smart class choice, and preparation for busy station environments result in a more comfortable and efficient trip on the Shanghai to Suzhou route.
