I’ve been a dog mom all my life and had pretty traumatic experiences with cats so I just thought they weren’t for me. However, all of that’s changed ever since I have gotten more experiences with cats and good pet owners!
I found this cutie near a food truck park and fell in love. It was tough being a first time kitty mom and also domesticating a stray kitten at the same time. But somehow, through months of patience and gentleness, I finally got our little man to accept me and our new home. He loves playtime, lots of petting, and certainly lets curiosity beat the best of him. My TANJIRO has given me another perspective to cats and I’m happy I can have this experience with him. Cats are certainly different in expressing their needs than dogs but both provide a type of happiness when you can connect with them.

One of the biggest things I noticed, after he'd settled in and wasn't quite the "trouble maker" he was initially, was just how much cats sleep. When I first started researching, the query "sleeping cat" popped up a lot, and for good reason! Cats are crepuscular, meaning they're most active during dawn and dusk. This explains why my little guy has bursts of energy, zooming around, pouncing on toys, and exploring every nook and cranny, only to crash for what seems like hours later.
It's completely normal for cats to sleep between 12 to 16 hours a day, sometimes even more for kittens like mine. I've learned to recognize his deep sleep (when he's completely sprawled out, sometimes even snoring softly!) versus lighter naps where an ear twitch or a slight movement means he's still aware of his surroundings. Creating a comfortable and safe sleeping space has been key. He loves a cozy bed tucked away in a quiet corner, but sometimes his "adventures" lead him to nap in the most unexpected places – on a sunbeam by the window, nestled in a laundry basket, or even on my keyboard! Observing these patterns helps me understand his energy levels and when he's most likely to want to play or cuddle.
Speaking of "adventures," keeping my little "trouble maker" engaged and stimulated has been crucial for his happiness and well-being. Since he's a highly curious tabby cat, I've had to get creative with playtime. Interactive toys like feather wands or laser pointers are a big hit, mimicking hunting behaviors. Puzzle feeders keep his mind sharp, and rotating his toys keeps things exciting. I also learned the importance of vertical space; he loves climbing his cat tree and perching up high, surveying his kingdom. These little "adventures" around the house, whether it's chasing a toy or exploring a new cardboard box, are vital for burning off that kitten energy and ensuring he gets good, restorative sleep afterwards.
For any new cat parents, especially those considering rescuing a stray like I did, patience is truly a virtue. It took months for my little man to fully trust me and feel at home. Understanding cat body language – subtle ear flicks, tail movements, or even a slow blink – helped build our bond. Regular vet check-ups, a consistent feeding schedule, and a clean litter box are foundational, but it's the daily interactions, the playtime, and the quiet moments of shared space that truly make the difference. My experience has shown me that while cats express themselves differently than dogs, the connection you build with them is incredibly rewarding.
Oh they are so different! 😂 But they each have so much love to give. Just wait till you have a dog and cat lol❤️
