For apples, I always pick ones that feel firm and heavy, with smooth, vibrant skin and a fresh stem attached. I avoid apples with too many spots, bruising, or dull skin as they tend to spoil quickly. Strawberries are a bit trickier — I look for bright red berries with fresh green leaves, a plump but firm texture, and a slight natural sheen. If there's any leaking juice or mold under the leaves, I discard those strawberries immediately since that signals overripeness or decay. Mangoes should have a slight give when pressed and emit a sweet aroma near the stem. I avoid very hard mangoes unless I plan to let them ripen at home. Bulky shape or wrinkled skin usually indicates overripeness or poor quality. For citrus fruits like oranges and lemons, weight plays a vital role. Heavier fruits tend to be juicier. I choose oranges with bright orange color and slightly springy skin. For lemons, brightness, firmness, and smooth skin are good indicators of freshness, while dry, wrinkled, or pale ones should be bypassed. Cherries are best when dark red, firm, plump, and glossy with green stems still attached. Pale or dull cherries or those with brown stems generally don't taste as fresh. Lastly, pineapples should have golden yellow color and fresh green leaves. Avoid those that are fully green, have sour or fermented smells, or dried and brown leaves. By developing a habit of checking for these signs, I've found that not only does the fruit taste better, but it also lasts longer after purchase. Always trust your senses—if the fruit feels or smells off, it’s best to choose another. This method helps me enjoy juicing and fresh snacking without waste or disappointment.
