she HURT

i’ve been wanting an industrial piercing since i was in middle school and first discovered pinterest. back in 2019 i was told i didn’t have the right anatomy by a tattoo parlor that’s now out of business due to a lawsuit (yikes) i went to a new piercing place and i was told we could do it!

definitely hurt on the inner part of my ear, but the outside cartilage was painless. id give it a 5/10 on the pain scale.

... Read moreWhile my industrial piercing journey turned out to be a dream come true, I know many people worry about things going wrong. It's true, an industrial piercing requires dedication and understanding the potential pitfalls is key to a smooth healing process. Based on my own experience and what I've learned, here's what you need to know to ensure your industrial piercing heals beautifully and avoids common issues like infection or migration. My initial experience of being told my anatomy wasn't suitable really highlights how critical it is to choose the right piercer. Not everyone's ear shape can support an industrial, which requires a specific flat area for the bar to sit without putting undue pressure on the cartilage. Forcing an industrial piercing onto unsuitable anatomy can lead to constant irritation, migration (where the jewelry slowly moves), or even rejection of the piercing entirely. Always get a professional assessment from a reputable piercer! If the silver barbell doesn't sit properly, it puts pressure on the cartilage, which is a recipe for trouble and discomfort. The '5/10 pain' I experienced was mostly during the actual piercing itself, but proper aftercare is what prevents the real pain – infection! An infected industrial piercing can be extremely painful and delay healing significantly. Look out for signs like excessive redness, throbbing pain, swelling that doesn't subside, or discharge that isn't clear or whitish lymph fluid. I always advise cleaning with a sterile saline solution twice a day and never touching it with unwashed hands. This is probably the most crucial step to prevent an infection. Choosing the right jewelry material, like high-quality surgical steel or implant-grade titanium for your initial silver barbell, is also crucial to minimize irritation and allergic reactions. Some people experience hypertrophic scarring, which looks like a small bump around the piercing site. These are often mistaken for keloids but are usually just irritation bumps. Consistent cleaning and sometimes a warm compress can help, but always consult your piercer first before trying any home remedies. Avoiding sleeping on your new piercing is also essential – a donut or travel pillow can be a lifesaver to prevent pressure and irritation, which can easily lead to these bumps or even an industrial piercing gone wrong. An industrial piercing has a longer healing time compared to other ear piercings, usually 6-12 months, sometimes even longer! You have to be patient and committed. I learned quickly that sleeping on it is a huge no-no. Also, be mindful of hair snagging, headphones, and even phone calls. It's a commitment! These tips apply universally, whether you're a man or a woman considering an industrial. The anatomy, pain, and aftercare needs are essentially the same for everyone. It's a bold and stylish piercing that looks fantastic on all genders, adding a unique edge to anyone's look. While my article features my personal 'dream piercing' with a classic silver barbell, there are so many styles once healed, from gold hoops to unique crescent-shaped earrings, allowing you to truly personalize your ear stack. Ultimately, good research, a reputable piercer, and diligent aftercare are your best defense against an industrial piercing gone wrong. Don't let fear hold you back, but do go into it informed!

I got mine done 2 years ago! The only issue I’ve had with mine is sometimes the balls at the end come loose 😭 and it swells up every now and then from irritation
