When Wanting More Starts Feeling Scary

Part 5 of 7 in the emotional hunger series.

There is a strange moment in healing when you finally start wanting more.

And it does not always feel empowering at first.

Sometimes it feels embarrassing.

Sometimes it feels selfish.

Sometimes it feels like you are betraying the version of you who survived by being easy to love, easy to please, easy to keep around.

Because when you have been emotionally hungry for a long time, even basic care can feel like a feast.

A text back.

A little consistency.

Someone not yelling.

Someone not disappearing.

Someone doing the bare minimum with a softer voice.

And for a while, that can feel like love.

So when your standards begin to rise, your nervous system may not immediately celebrate. It may panic.

It may whisper, “Who do you think you are?”

It may ask, “What if nobody gives you more?”

It may convince you that wanting clarity makes you difficult, wanting effort makes you needy, wanting consistency makes you too much.

But wanting more does not mean you became ungrateful.

It may mean you finally stopped confusing relief with love.

You can be grateful for what helped you survive and still admit it was not enough to help you feel safe.

You can understand why you accepted less without continuing to call it love.

And you can raise your standards without becoming cold, bitter, or cruel.

Sometimes healing is not a dramatic exit.

Sometimes healing is the quiet moment when your own heart finally says:

“I cannot keep starving and calling it peace.”

Part 6 coming tomorrow: When Your Standards Start Feeling Lonely.

... Read moreIn my own journey of healing emotional hunger, I experienced the exact feelings described here—wanting more after years of accepting less felt both scary and confusing. It’s like your inner voice constantly questions if you are being too much or unreasonable when you simply start expecting kindness, consistency, and respect. One key insight I found was that those initial pangs of guilt are not signs that I was wrong to want more; rather, they were echoes from old conditioning that made me believe my needs were a burden. I also discovered that raising my standards didn’t mean I had to become cold or harsh; it meant learning to be softer with myself while being clearer in my relationships. This shift helped me stop confusing basic care or relief with true love, allowing me to stop starving emotionally and finally recognize when something that once felt like enough was no longer truly nourishing. Many times, I missed my old self who was easy to love because she accepted crumbs. But that part was just trying to survive. Recognizing this helped me be gentle on my past self. As my awareness grew, I learned to set boundaries without guilt and ask for what I truly deserved. This gradual process was sometimes lonely but ultimately empowering. If you’re feeling hesitant or scared about wanting more in your healing journey, know that it’s a natural and important part of growth. It’s not about being needy or difficult; it’s about honoring your true worth and reclaiming the love you always deserved but were taught to settle for less. Remember, healing is often a quiet, inward revolution—a decision to stop starving and start seeking peace and love on your own terms.
