Having a French Bulldog like my Mick means endless cuddles, and one of his cutest habits is burrowing right under the blankets! Seriously, if there's a blanket, Mick will be under it. It's not just Mick though; I've learned this is super common for Frenchies, and there are some fascinating reasons why. When I first got Mick, I was so surprised to see him immediately tunnel under anything soft. It made me curious, and after some research and observing my little guy, I realized it's a very innate behavior for these adorable pups. First off, warmth! French Bulldogs, despite their sturdy build, can get chilly easily, especially in cooler climates. Their short coats don't offer much insulation. Being a brachycephalic (flat-faced) breed, they might also seek out enclosed spaces for a sense of security. The snugness of a blanket can mimic the feeling of a den, providing a comforting and safe haven where they can relax and regulate their breathing. It’s a deep-rooted instinct from their wild ancestors who sought shelter and protection from predators and the elements. Plus, let's be honest, who doesn't love being cozy? Mick definitely does, and it’s adorable to watch him nestle in. I used to wonder if it was entirely safe for him to be tucked away, but after speaking with my vet and observing Mick, I've learned it's perfectly normal for them. The key is to ensure they can move freely and aren't getting too hot. I always make sure Mick's blankets are breathable – lightweight fleece or cotton works best – and not too heavy that he can't easily push them off if he feels overheated. Keeping an eye on their breathing and making sure they can easily get out if they want to is crucial for their well-being and safety. Always check on them, especially if they're new to the blanket-burrowing habit. For Mick, I've found soft, fleece blankets are his absolute favorite. I also make sure his bed is comfy and inviting, like the one he loves to sleep on, sometimes with his little white toy balls nearby, as I’ve seen him do. It’s all about creating that perfect little sanctuary for them to feel secure and loved. My Berniedoodle, Angie, is a bit different; she loves her space and sometimes just prefers to sprawl out on the couch with one of her favorite toys nearby, almost like a guard dog for her precious possessions! Their individual preferences are what make them so unique and endearing. Beyond the blanket burrowing, Frenchies can have some funny sleep quirks. You might hear them snore (which is totally normal for their breed due to their flat faces!), or see them twitching and 'running' in their sleep, which truly shows how active their dreams are! It’s all part of their charming personality. Observing Mick and Angie's different sleep styles – Mick nestled deep in his blankets, Angie stretching out and keeping an eye on things – really reminds me how unique each dog is, even when they're just catching Z's.
