Team work makes the dream work
Windy day outside messes our frisbee throwing but they still got it ! #dogsoflemon8 #dogs
Playing frisbee with your dog is such a fantastic way to bond, get some exercise, and keep their minds active. But let's be real, Mother Nature doesn't always cooperate! Just like my recent outing, a windy day can turn a simple game of fetch into an Olympic-level challenge. So, how do we make the most of it and keep the fun going? First off, choosing the right frisbee can make a huge difference. On a super windy day, those lightweight, flimsy discs can become uncontrollable kites. I’ve found that slightly heavier, more durable rubber frisbees tend to cut through the wind better, giving your dog a fairer chance at catching them. Also, consider the color! A bright, contrasting color will be easier for your dog to spot against a busy background or a cloudy sky. Adjusting your throwing technique is key. Instead of a high, arcing throw that the wind can easily catch and carry away, try lower, faster throws. A sidearm throw, keeping the disc closer to the ground, can sometimes work wonders. And don't be afraid to throw into the wind slightly, letting it slow the disc down just enough for your dog to intercept. It's all about experimentation and learning what works best for your specific conditions and your dog's agility. Finding a sheltered spot can also save the day. If your usual open field is just too blustery, look for areas with natural windbreaks like a line of trees, a building, or even a slight dip in the terrain. Sometimes just shifting your play area by a few yards can significantly reduce the wind's impact. Beyond just dealing with the wind, remember the benefits of frisbee play. It's not just physical exercise; it's a huge mental workout too! Dogs have to track the disc, anticipate its trajectory, and make quick decisions. This kind of engagement can be just as tiring (in a good way!) as a long run. It also reinforces commands like 'wait,' 'fetch,' and 'drop it,' making it a fun training session disguised as play. For those just getting started with frisbee, be patient! Don't expect your dog to be a pro on day one. Start with soft, fabric discs that are gentle on their mouths. Begin with short, rolling throws to pique their interest, then gradually move to short aerial throws. Always make it a positive experience with lots of praise and maybe even a tasty treat for successful catches. And remember to end the session before your dog gets too tired or frustrated, leaving them wanting more. Ultimately, whether it's battling the wind or enjoying a calm day, these play sessions are about strengthening the incredible bond we share with our canine companions. It's those moments of shared joy, determination, and teamwork that truly make our dogs feel like family. So, grab a disc and go make some windy-day memories!
