What to Know About 2 Part Resin

Tips for Beginner Resin Enthusiasts:

- Mix it thoroughly! You can see that the resin here is NOT mixed thoroughly. It almost looks like frozen alcohol. It should not look like that AT ALL if u want to avoid improper curing. When I say thorough , I mean it.. scrape the bottom, the edges, mix in figure 8, & do that for like 5 minutes straight. 😅😅 I always hold it up in front of a light to see if there are any more striations in the resin.

- Mixing quickly.. won’t always help. If you mix vigorously, you’ll end up with a bunch of bubbles, like in these videos. That’s not too big of a deal but of course it’s not ideal. You can use a degass chamber to get rid of them, or if I have more time, I just sit the cup in warm water for a few minutes. The bubbles will rise & dissipate before your pour.

-USE THE CORRECT RATIO! Make sure you read the resin and hardener instructions specified by the manufacturer. For example, the ratio of mixing may be 2:1, which means for every two parts of resin, you need one part of hardener. If you don’t follow the instructions, you are far more likely to end up with a sticky/tacky, bending, or compromised & toxic product.

- Consider the temperature in your studio. 🔥❄️ Mix and store your resin in a room that is between 70 and 75 degrees fahrenheit. Colder temperatures can cause micro bubbles while warmer temperatures can cause the resin to cure too fast. Remember, resin cures with heat and already has an exothermic reaction when curing (it generates heat as it cures as a chemical reaction called polymerization). So, if you’re working in a hot room, you’ll have less working time to pour!

- Purchase quality resin. For example, if you’re casting into a mold, you’ll want a thinner viscosity resin to reduce bubbling. Check out the link in my comments for resin recommendations! #ad

... Read moreHey fellow resin artists! Building on those essential tips for mixing 2-part resin, I wanted to share some more personal insights I've gathered from my own crafting journey – especially for those common head-scratching moments where you feel like 'these don't work'! First off, let’s talk about curing times. The original post touched on working time, but what about when your masterpiece is actually *ready*? Generally, for most 2-part epoxy resins, you’ll have a 'tack-free' time (when it's no longer sticky to the touch) anywhere from 12-24 hours. But don't be fooled! That doesn't mean it's fully cured. For full hardness, durability, and chemical resistance, most projects need a full 3-7 days to cure completely. This is super important, especially if you're making functional items like epoxy resin coasters. Demolding too early can lead to bending, distortion, or fingerprints, which is definitely when 'these don't work' feelings start to creep in! I learned this the hard way with a set of beautiful floral coasters that ended up with slight warping because I was too impatient. Always check your specific resin brand's guidelines for exact cure times – they can vary significantly depending on the product and ambient conditions. Speaking of epoxy resin fails, we've all been there, right? Beyond the sticky resin from incorrect ratios or poor mixing 2-part resin, have you ever dealt with cloudy or hazy spots? This often happens if there's too much humidity in your workspace, or if you've introduced contaminants. Resin and moisture are not friends! I always try to work on a dry, low-humidity day, or use a dehumidifier if I'm working in a damp basement. Another common fail is micro-bubbles that just won't go away. While warm water baths for your mixed resin cup are great, for really stubborn bubbles, a quick pass with a heat gun or even a kitchen torch (used very carefully!) over the surface after pouring can work wonders. Just keep it moving to avoid scorching your resin. And for all you crafters out there making two-part epoxy resin for crafts like jewelry or those specialty coasters, here's a little trick: when pouring into molds, pour slowly from a height. This helps release trapped air bubbles as the resin flows. If you're adding pigments or glitter, ensure they are thoroughly mixed in before combining parts A and B, or add them very slowly during the mixing process to minimize air incorporation. I recently experimented with a new pigment for a coaster and realized my "distortion effect" was actually just unevenly mixed pigment creating weird streaks. My personal rule of thumb now is to mix for at least 5 minutes, scraping the sides and bottom, and then double-check in front of a bright light for any striations – just like the original post mentioned! It really makes a difference in achieving that perfectly clear or uniformly colored finish. Also, consider the type of mold you're using; silicone molds are fantastic for easy demolding, but even they can cause issues if not clean. Proper preparation, including ensuring your mold is dust-free, contributes immensely to a professional-looking finish. Don't rush the process, and your 2 part resin projects will thank you!

I tried Dimensional Magic for the first time while working on my mini Sonic cup 🥤 and… why does nobody talk about this stuff?? Here’s why I’m side-eyeing resin now: 1. Non-toxic (your lungs will thank you) 2. No UV light needed 3. Dries solid like the real thing
