... Read moreI was so thrilled with how my first full nail set turned out, especially since it was on a friend! If you're eyeing a similar funky blue and white nail look, especially for short nails, here are some tips I picked up along the way to help you create your own unique designs, whether it's chrome flames, checkerboard patterns, or even a cute evil eye!
Getting Started: DIY Funky Short Nails
Short nails are fantastic for experimenting with bold designs because they're generally easier to manage and less prone to breaking. For this set, we used full cover tips, which are a lifesaver for getting a perfect shape every time. If you're working on natural nails, make sure to prep them well: gently push back cuticles, buff lightly, and cleanse thoroughly. I used an Aimeli builder gel in a bottle, which is great for adding strength. Remember to apply thin, even layers and cure properly under your lamp to avoid any lifting!
Mastering Those Funky Designs
The real fun begins with the art!
Chrome Flames: To get those cool chrome flames, I first painted the base color (blue or white) and cured it. Then, I applied a no-wipe top coat, cured it for about 15-20 seconds (it needs to be slightly tacky but not wet), and then gently rubbed in the chrome powder with an applicator. For the flame shape, I used a fine liner brush and then buffed over with powder. Seal it all with another layer of top coat!
Evil Eyes: This design looks complex but is surprisingly simple. After your base color, use a dotting tool to create a white circle. Once cured, use a smaller dotting tool for a blue circle inside the white, then an even smaller black dot in the center. A tiny white dot for the sparkle really brings it to life!
Blue and White Stripes & Checkerboard: These patterns require a steady hand and a good striping brush. For stripes, apply your base color, cure, then use a thin brush with your contrasting color to draw lines. For checkerboard, paint squares, cure, then fill in the alternating squares. Curing each color layer as you go prevents smudging and gives a crisp finish.
Gold Star Embellishments: To attach these little treasures, I found that a tiny dab of builder gel works perfectly as an adhesive. Place your embellishment, cure it quickly to hold, then encapsulate it with a clear top coat to ensure it doesn't snag or fall off.
Product Insights & Longevity
I used Beetles blue gel polish and Makartt white gel polish, both affordable and vibrant. The chrome powder and gold embellishments from Temu were surprisingly good for the price! Don't be afraid to explore different brands and finishes. To make your funky short nails last, always cap the free edge of your nail with every layer (base, color, top coat). This seals the layers and prevents chipping. A good quality, durable top coat is your best friend for extending the life of your manicure.
Experimenting with different blues, whites, and chrome effects can lead to endless creative possibilities. Short nails don't mean less fun – they just mean a new canvas for your imagination! Give it a try, and don't be afraid to get creative!
