there’s such thing as over-washing your face

Over-washing your skin can dry it out and damage your skin barrier. You should limit to washing your face only in the morning and at night. If you use a cleanser with an exfoliant like salicylic acid, consider getting another cleanser for your second wash because overusing an exfoliant can also strip your skin. Unfortunately, I’ve learned this the hard way… I ended up adding the Haruharu Wonder Black Rice Moisture 5.5 Soft Cleansing Gel in addition to the Anua Heartleaf Quercetinol Pore Deep Cleansing Foam (includes BHA, which is an exfoliant).

Initially, I thought washing my face multiple times with strong exfoliants like salicylic acid would clear my skin faster, but it only left my skin feeling tight, dry, and irritated. What helped me was introducing a gentle, hydrating cleanser into my routine—in my case, the Haruharu Wonder Black Rice Moisture 5.5 Soft Cleansing Gel. This cleanser helped soothe my skin while effectively removing impurities without stripping natural oils. I paired it with a targeted exfoliating cleanser like the Anua Heartleaf Quercetinol Pore Deep Cleansing Foam once a day only, ensuring I didn't overuse exfoliants that can damage the skin barrier. Limiting face washing to twice daily—morning and night—proved essential. Excessive washing can eliminate not only dirt but also essential oils and lipids that keep the skin healthy, which ironically may cause your skin to produce more oil or become sensitive. Incorporating moisturizers after cleansing also enhanced skin hydration and barrier repair. If you have sensitive or oily skin, selecting cleansers with balanced formulations that support oil control and maintain ceramides, such as those in Cerave or Cetaphil ranges, can also be beneficial. Over-exfoliating is an easy trap to fall into, especially with products containing BHA; it's critical to alternate or limit usage to avoid barrier damage. Ultimately, a mindful skincare routine—focusing on gentle cleansing, moderated exfoliation, and proper moisturizing—boosts skin health effectively. Listening to your skin's response and adjusting accordingly can prevent problems caused by over-washing and over-exfoliation.
