I've just heard a talk that makes me very excited because it makes me look at Executive Function (EF) or frontal brain skills.
The information on this talk makes us realize that EF
‼️ is not something that can be developed with brain training games or mobile apps, but it flourishes when a child is in a properly designed context. ‼️
We normally look for EF development tools, but this talk points to context or environment.
Context-free EF. Not available in real life. 🌟
The talk starts with a story about a card test used to measure EF. Children are given a color card and suddenly change the rules to follow the shape. But many children still follow the old rules. This is an example of how in the lab we can measure EF.
😱 but clearly see that it does not reflect real life.
🌟 context or social environment helps drive out the EF power in a child's brain. 🌟
And then she raised the marshmallow test.
What Doebel did was add "group context" to it.
She told the child, "My group friends chose to wait."
As a result, they can really wait longer, and not just wait, they come up with small strategies to save themselves, such as avoiding candy, sitting on their hands, or humming!
Oh, this talk confirms that EF does not depend on the child alone, but will flourish in a context conducive to its use, especially in a social context.

For parents, this is an important lesson. EF development is not by ordering their children to be disciplined or to rely solely on brain training games, but by designing real environments in which their children need EF to achieve their goals, such as setting corners for homework free of distractions, creating simple rules that make waiting meaningful, or putting their children in a group of friends with positive behavior to imitate.

This is what Junbi has been trying to build. We designed children to switch from play to school, to "learn before you go to play," to learn behavior from friends in sports teams, and to collaborate on project-based learning that requires planning, restraint, and working with others.
