The plot invites children and adults to begin to transform into bees, trees, wind, rain, various animals and things in nature, through fictional play together throughout the book.
Tales are inviting us to "play fictitious together with his loved ones."
Developmental psychologists like Piaget call this kind of play Symbolic Play.
When a child says it's becoming a bee,
He's not just faking.
But practicing using symbols instead of meaning
This is the same foundation that children will use in the future when learning language, reading, writing and abstract thinking.
So reading a story is both a role-playing and a "brain training field."
The painter, Shawn Harris, opted for a children's candle-like painting, untidy lines, not exactly colored, but full of energy and movement.
Until the reader feels like he is looking at a picture that the child has drawn himself from the imagination
The more you read aloud, the more fun it is.
Because books are designed to engage children all the time.
Shawn Harris is an illustrator and children's book picture writer. His work, Have You Ever Seen a Flower?, won the Caldecott Honor, one of the top awards in the children's picture book industry in the United States.
If anyone has ever read that volume, it will be found that Harris has a knack for taking children to view the ordinary world as a space of wonder.
And in Let's Be Bees, he did the same thing again.
But this time takes us to look at "fictional play" as a miracle, not allergic to nature at all.
"Let's be bees."
Maybe being a bee together for five minutes.
It could mean more to a child than we thought. 🐝💛
