A SINGER’S GUIDE… (A Series): #1

IMPORTANT: I’m not teaching you how to sing—I just wanted to give tips on how to maintain the quality of your voice. and you don’t need to be an opera singer to follow these tips! classical music is the foundation of all music (i.e., why pianists are first taught Bach, Beethoven, and Mozart), so it’s connected to all types of music in one way or another.

something that I love about being classically trained is the fact that we’re taught the ins-and-outs of our instruments, what’s important (and why), etc. I wanted to share what I’ve been taught over the years (I’ve been training and taking lessons since I was 7), and hopefully others can find use of it in their own lives (whether it be professional, educational, hobby, or just curious!).

I’m making a series of this, and I hope you enjoy!

Divide your body weight (in pounds) by two to determine the ideal daily intake in ounces. If residing in a dry or high-altitude area, increase this to around 75% of your weight. Avoid very cold beverages as they can cause vocal muscle tension, adversely affecting your performance. Instead, opt for room-temperature or warm water to keep your vocal cords relaxed. Incorporating herbal teas, such as throat coat teas, can also be a soothing method to complement your hydration routine. Look for brands that offer caffeine-free options, as caffeine can be dehydrating and may irritate your vocal cords. Instead of waiting until the last minute to hydrate, develop a consistent water-drinking habit in the days leading up to performances. This will help your body adjust and perform optimally without uncomfortable interruptions. Remember, your body is your most important instrument as a singer—taking care of it positively impacts your vocal quality and overall health!
